The
UK and Ireland is the second largest market for semiconductor products in Europe
and, combined with Germany (No.1) and France (No.3), represent >70% of the
European Total Available Market (TAM). Of the £3.6 billion domestic semiconductor
TAM (projected sales revenue 2005, UK and Ireland), 80% is supplied directly
by manufacturers and 20% is handled by distributors. The importance of the interface
between the direct customer and the manufacturer (or the manufacturer's accredited
representative) is therefore easy to see. |

The
UK has a wide base of indigenous electronic systems manufacturers and a highly
skilled design and manufacturing labour force, which combined with flexible employment
legislation and Government incentives continues to make the UK an attractive
proposition for inward investment by multi-national organisations. |
 |
 |
|
|
There
are over 12,000 companies in the UK involved with the development and manufacture
of semiconductor technology dependent products. It's a key part of the Spectrum-Infocus
remit to maintain close working relationships with the current leaders in every
sector and partner with the established and the emerging companies developing
the 'must-have' products of tomorrow. |

The
semiconductor content in cars continues to increase and is no longer restricted
to high-end models. Whilst the applications for electronic control of the
drive train, engine, safety and braking system of a car continues to grow, experience
indicates that the largest potential for growth in the short term will come from
the In-Car Entertainment (ICE), comfort and navigation/security and communications
system sectors. |

Communications |
|
 |
|
|
The
overall communications market in the UK is forecast to be flat in 2005 with the
major telecommunication suppliers constrained by the reduced capital spending
of national and global carriers. This could be offset by encouraging sales of
new-featured cellular mobile phone (CMP) handsets and the increasing momentum
of the 3G infrastructure roll out. |

In
the datacoms arena Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and Broadband Wireless Access
(BWA) technology and Wireless LANs feature high in the list of high growth wireless
applications. The wired sector will be dominated by LAN backbone and DSL equipment.
Communications is one of the largest markets that Spectrum-Infocus addresses
and we will continue to work closely with all the major movers in this sector
as they design their next generation systems. |

Computer |
|
 |
|
|
The
global computer market is considered to be mature with sales revenues at best
flat compared to a peak in 2000. However, pressure
for greater processing power delivered at a shrinking price point will be relentless.
Broadband and wireless connectivity are major drivers.
Many of the global names are active in our domestic market, producing PC, servers
and mainframe computers. Spectrum-Infocus' support also extends to the many
UK developers and manufacturers of computer peripheral and office equipment. |

Consumer
(Household) Electronics |
|
 |
|
|
The
opportunity for growth in the UK market for technology-based household products
will be fuelled by the increasing demand for smart appliances, environmental
control, sophisticated digital entertainment systems, home networking
and security systems. Such systems, destined
for manufacture outside the developed world, may well be locally designed. The
white goods industry will make a further swing towards electronic technology,
principally for use in control and safety features, status sensors and readers.
The Spectrum-Infocus role is to focus its demand creation activities with the
leading organisations whose products and systems require high performance semiconductor
products. |

Contract
Design and Manufacturing |
|
 |
|
|
The
CEM sector in the UK and Ireland continues to contract as the major players move
their production facilities over to lower cost locations. The future is more
promising for domestic Tier 2 CEM/EMS companies, particularly in Ireland: These
companies tend to cater for design and/or small scale or pre-production runs,
typically of B2B products developed to meet an escalating demand. Our CEM Sector
Manager in Ireland is also tasked with partnering early with the management
teams behind the MBOs of smaller contract design/manufacturing sites sold off
by exiting Tier 1 companies. |

The
reduction in the fortune of much of the UK & Ireland’s indigenous OEM
base has released considerable design engineering and managerial talent to the
independent design consultancy and contract design engineering sector. The UK & Ireland
boasts some of the world’s premiere design companies, many of which specialise
in Set Top Box and Wireless Communication technology. The independent sector
of our industry is notoriously difficult to penetrate and track, however Spectrum-Infocus
recognises that success in these accounts can have a global impact. |

Energy,
Industry and Services |
|
 |
|
|
This
broad market segment is understandably hard to define due to its 'catch-all'
nature: Manufacturers of medical equipment are included
in this segment: Spectrum enjoys close relationships with developers and producers
of medical imaging, scanning and diagnostic tools. In the Energy market segment
products designed-in or introduced by Spectrum can be found in everything
from high voltage power monitoring products to power supplies for telecommunication
and networking equipment. Industrial automation and control
is a particular focus. |

Space,
Avionics and Defence |
|
 |
|
|
The
UK has always held a leadership position in key avionics and defence systems
with UK companies often acting as prime contractors on international projects.
Spectrum-Infocus maintains close links with these companies and with the many
specialist sub-contractors that provide them with specialist services. |
